The village of Agios Ioannis Kamenos belongs to the municipality of Agios Vasilios. It is located in the south of Rethymno, about 25 kilometers from the city and 7 kilometers from the area of Plakias. On its northern side, it borders the small forest of Ai-Yiannis, while on the south it borders the village of Kanevos. Furthermore, it is only 600 meters from the Kotsifos Gorge.
Some sources think it was founded during the Middle Byzantine period (867-1025 AD). Certainly, over the centuries its residential and population activity changed often.
The current image of the village is shaped by traditional houses (restored and not) dating from the beginning of the 19th century and later.
